Finding Alimony Solutions
Unlike child support, there is no Florida guideline for spousal support or alimony. The amount, the terms and the duration are all negotiable. It is a very good idea to have an experienced attorney by your side during these negotiations.
I am R. Gregory Colvin, LLC, a family law attorney with more than 20 years of experience in litigation and negotiation. I can be your advocate during negotiations whether you are the payee or the payor.

Florida Spousal Support Attorney
I have helped both men and women with their alimony or spousal support determinations. Either men or women can receive alimony. There are several general types of alimony awarded in Florida:
- Permanent alimony — may be awarded to the spouse with less income earning ability if the marriage was determined by the court to be a long term marriage
- Bridge-the-gap alimony — a tapering amount or short-term (6 months to five years) amount of alimony to allow someone the time to get back on their financial feet
- Rehabilitative alimony — spousal support for someone who has a career plan for education or training for a new profession or job
In general, the payee may lose alimony if he or she re-marries or cohabitates with a new partner.
How Much Is Alimony or Spousal Support?
The amount of alimony or spousal support will depend upon a number of factors which include:
- What was the standard of living during the marriage?
- How long were you married?
- Your age, employment history and earning ability if you are seeking maintenance
- Your physical condition if you are seeking maintenance
- What are your financial resources and your spouse's, and what is your earning ability in today's job market?
- What is your ability, after divorce, to contribute to the future educational costs of your children?
- Is any time necessary for re-education or skill training, and what would it cost?
